At the age of 33, Fr. Damien de Veuster left his mission parish to work among the lepers of Hawaii, eventually dying of leprosy when he was 49. Like Christ himself, he became rejected for the rejected, a leper for the lepers: something rare in a world that wants to eliminate suffering. The author has updated and revised the text in light of Damien’s canonization by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.
